"Proclaming the Word of God through Thoughts, Ideas, and Concepts"
Food For Thought
Figure it out for yourself, my lad,
You've all that the greatest of men have had; Two arms, two hands, two legs, two eyes, And a brain to use if you would be wise, With this equipment they all began-- So start from the top and say, I CAN. Look them over, the wise and the great, They take their food from a common plate, And similar knives and forks they use, With similar laces they tie their shoes; The world considers them brave and smart, But you've all they had when they made their start. You can triumph and come to skill, You can be great if you only will; You're well equipped for what fight you choose, You have arms and legs and a brain to use; And the man who has risen great deeds to do Began his life with no more than you. You are the handicap you must face, You are the one who must choose your place. You must say where you want to go, How much you will study the truth to know; God has equipped you for life, but He Lets you decide what you want to be.
Courage must come from the soul within;
The man must furnish the will to win. So figure it out for yourself my lad, You were born with all that the great have had; With your equipment they all began, Get hold of yourself and say, 'I CAN.'
Miss Robinson, as she was known then and later married Mr. Mckinley Beasley, taught me all through High School. She was a mentor, role model, and an example for young women. Teachers were different when I attended school, in the fifties and sixties they were genuine and really cared about the welfare of their students; just as many good teachers care the same way today.
Summer Hill High was a small school; located in Cartersville, a town in north Georgia. The schools were segregated so we used "hand-me-down text books" from the White schools; but we received an education second to none because of our teachers. Many notables came from this small school, Grammy Award winners, a Supreme Court Justice, and other winners in their own rights. "Do not despise the day of small beginnings." Miss Robinson also taught drama; under her tutelage we learned how to act, read and write scripts. I remember one time when we were invited to Fort Valley State College to perform and we had to leave very early in the morning so we had to sleep at the teacher's house the night before. That was an example of the caring teachers and it was a great experience for the students. Mrs. Beasley continues her service in the Les Savant, an organization which she is a founder, Delta Kappa, AAUW, and Retired Teachers.
She also teaches the Galeda Class at the Mont Zion Missionary Baptist Church and has done so for forty-six years.
Although the school, Summer Hill High, is no longer in existence and all of the teachers have retired the memory and experiences we received there will never die; it will continue to live in each and every one of us.
Mrs. Beasley started her career in the Cartersville City School System teaching at the school where she attended, Summer Hill High School; she taught English and was the part-time Librarian. She continued her career as Librarian at Cartersville Elementary and Middle Schools. She continued teaching until 1986 when she retired after thirty-six years of service.
Nancy R. Beasley was born on October 11, 1928 to the proud parents of the late Elller Pierce and Ishmael S. Robinson in the city of Cartersville, Georgia. She attended Summer Hill Elementary and High schools.
She continued her education at Fort
Valley State College and Atlanta University (CAU).
Mrs. Beasley |
